In order to be successful at any sport you need the right equipment. The same holds true for fishing. When you think about what gear you need for fishing you naturally will think about poles, rods, reels and bait or lures. These are very important (try catching a fish without a pole!), but should not be overshadowed by the tackle box.
The tackle box is a carefully guarded item for avid fisherman. In my tackle box are the stories of many fishing trips and it contains an assortment things that have worked well for me. If you are just starting out you can easily be overwhelmed by the plethora of choices available. Stick to the basics of fishing and setting up your gear can really be quite simple.
Before you can fill up a tackle box, you will need to have a tackle box. Make sure the box is strong and sturdy. It should be small enough to carry, but hefty enough to take a little abuse so that it will last you a long time. Also, make sure it has a strong handle to make carrying easier.
Perhaps the most important part is the latch. The last thing you want is for all of your gear to spill all over the boat or, even worse, in the water.
Start outfitting your case with the essential items; hooks, line and sinkers. When you are buying items, make sure you get good quality; these will need to last. Get line that will fit your reel and work for the fish you are going after. In my tackle box are an abundant supply of these items as they are the basic necessities for fishing.
Hooks are probably the most important, because without them you will be using your hands or trying to hit the fish with your pole. Sinkers will be used to keep your bait below the surface of the water and some kinds are used to keep your lures near the bottom.
The variety of lures that are available can be quite staggering, and the color assortment is like a fishing circus. Different types of fish will be attracted to different types of lures, so you might need to pick up several different kinds depending on where you will be fishing.
Some of the tools I have in my tackle box include needle nose pliers, fingernail clippers, fish stringers and maps. A lot of people forget the maps, but you want to make sure you can find your favorite spot again. And more importantly, you want to make sure you can find civilization again!
Experience will be the best thing to help you know what to keep. You will quickly discover what you use the most and what you wish you had! Although I don’t want to give up all my secrets, knowing a little about what’s in my tackle box can help you get started on some fish stories of your own.
